Modernizing actuarial business processes through DevOps (AWS)
Legacy spreadsheets replaced by interactive cloud-native applications on AWS. Business units made autonomous through DevOps capability transfer.
01 Challenges and context
Context and strategic stakes
A major Swiss insurer, undergoing significant digitalization, faced challenges with its expert business teams (actuarial, pricing, risk modeling) still relying on a myriad of obsolete tools and 'homemade' Excel macros. These spreadsheets, highly uncollaborative and unstable, severely limited commercial agility and the precision of pricing simulations. The IT department aimed to modernize this landscape by converting these calculation models into interactive, scalable Web applications, hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud. The ultimate goal was to technically empower business teams (DevOps Culture) to configure and operate their tools without continuous external integrator support.
02 Work carried out
Approach and methodology
We audited all historical scripts to map the mathematical and functional constraints of the pricing models. Our architects then designed the target environment on AWS with a Cloud-Native focus. The new serverless architecture leveraged AWS Amplify, CloudFront, and S3 for hyper-fast WebApp distribution (developed in ReactJS), Cognito for strict authentication security (IAM), and CloudWatch for operational observability. Environments were scripted using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) to ensure perfect reproducibility.
