A major luxury sector player, extensively leveraging Azure App Service for its development and test environments, experienced a silent and internally undetectable billing drift. During a routine control audit, our FinOps experts discovered that instances covered by "Azure DevTest" reservations were paradoxically billed at a higher rate than on-demand instances. The dual challenge involved proving the technical error to the vendor to demand a refund, then fortifying governance to prevent recurrence.

Approach and methodology
We conducted an in-depth analytical dive into raw billing data (Usage Details) exported from Azure over a rolling period of several months. By mathematically reconstructing pricing models, we isolated the pricing inconsistency between the amortized cost of reserved "DevTest" instances and the catalog price of the On-Demand model. This expertise allowed us to precisely identify the corrupted billing lines.
